A while ago, I made this illustration for an article on the differences in several subspecies of the Red-rumped swallow. In recent years, both the daurica and japonica subspecies has been observed in Norway. The two subspecies have an eastern origin, and the most striking difference from the European rufula is the heavily striped underparts, and the amount of red in the rump. The article has not yet been published, but probably will be in the near future. The birds in the illustration are daurica (top) and rufula (bottom).
